The Studio Photography is owned and operated by James & Jen Richardson along with James’ father, Jim Richardson. We are a family owned business with the strength of three generations of knowledge and experience. We have been serving our clients with excellence and satisfaction since 1972.
This is our story:
It all started officially in 1972 out of “Dad Richardson’s print shop” but lets back up a bit…
Jim’s dad, Lyndon, is the starting point for our photography business. In the late 1950’s, Lyndon started “Richardson’s Print Shop” in downtown North Vernon, IN. He had a meager start with his Chandler and Price printing press and his own newspaper called the “Independent”. While working in and helping with his dads newspaper, Jim found his love for photography and the rest is history. Ok, back to 1972:
Jim & Billie Richardson started “Richardson Studio” in a little corner of “Dad Richardson’s print shop”. Jim was the manager, equipped with his Ricoh & Yashica Mat cameras, and his wife, Billie was the secretary/retoucher/janitor/everything else person.
Here is one of our first ad, ran in June 1972.
In May of 1973, Jim & Billie moved to Seymour to start their business out of their home. First they had to obtain a variance for “special use” then they set up shop. With a wobbly sign out front, the reception area in their living room and the camera room in their biggest bedroom, they were in business! They then began to advertise heavily to the Seymour area. Here is a picture of the wobbly sign and some of the ads.
In 1976, Jim & Billie Richardson moved to Columbus, IN and took over Galbraith Studio.
In 1977 Jim & Billie had their heart set on a brand new building in a better location. In June of that year, they achieved both.
In 1986 Jim & Billie purchased The Studio Photography in Seymour, IN and decided to keep the name. Over the past 40+ years it has been our passion to keep innovating and striving to make your portrait experience the best it can be.
